How to Reach Gurez Valley
Reaching Gurez Valley from Srinagar is an adventure in itself, as the journey takes you through high mountain passes and scenic landscapes. Since this region is remote and partially sensitive due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC), proper planning is essential.
Route to Gurez from Srinagar
- Srinagar to Bandipora
Your journey begins in Srinagar. The drive to Bandipora covers around 60 km and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Bandipora serves as the last major town before the climb toward Razdan Pass. - Bandipora to Razdan Pass
From Bandipora, the road ascends towards the majestic Razdan Pass, located at an altitude of nearly 3,000 meters (9,800 ft). This pass is the main entry point into Gurez Valley and offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. - Razdan Pass to Gurez (Dawar)
After crossing Razdan Pass, the road descends into the pristine landscapes of Gurez. The journey from the pass to Dawar, the main town of Gurez Valley, is about 30 km, taking 1 to 2 hours depending on road and weather conditions.
Important:
The Bandipora–Gurez route often remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, cutting off access to the valley. Always check updated road and weather conditions before you travel.
Permit Requirements for Gurez
For Indian Citizens
No special permit is required for Indian tourists to visit Gurez Valley. However, registration at Army checkpoints along the route from Srinagar to Dawar is mandatory.
- Carry your Aadhar Card (physical copy preferred).
- A soft copy is also acceptable at most checkpoints.
For Foreign Nationals
The earlier system of obtaining permits from the DC office in Bandipora or Srinagar is no longer valid.
As of the latest regulations:
❌ Foreign nationals are not allowed beyond Bandipora and cannot enter Gurez Valley.
Only Indian citizens are permitted to travel past the restricted areas leading into the valley.
