Tour of Vaishno Devi – Different Ways to Complete the Vaishno Devi Yatra
The sacred journey to Vaishno Devi attracts over a million devotees every year, all seeking the divine blessings of Mata Rani. If you are planning to trek the 12–13 km pilgrimage route, it is important to understand the different travel options available for reaching the holy shrine. The yatra takes place in two segments: Katra → Ardhkuwari and Ardhkuwari → Bhawan, and each segment offers multiple travel modes to choose from based on comfort and convenience.
1. Vaishno Devi Yatra by Trekking
The traditional and most preferred way to complete the pilgrimage is trekking from Katra to Bhawan, a distance of approximately 13 km. There are two trekking routes from Katra to Ardhkuwari, and similarly two routes from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan, each varying slightly in length and elevation. Many devotees also continue the journey to the Bhairavnath Temple, located just a few kilometres from the Bhawan. Pilgrims who wish to undertake the yatra at their own pace often opt to walk the entire trail, while some choose ponies or horses at different segments based on stamina and physical comfort.
2. Vaishno Devi Yatra by Helicopter Ride
For children, elderly devotees, or pilgrims facing physical limitations, the Vaishno Devi helicopter service offers a comfortable and time-saving alternative. Due to high demand, helicopter tickets should be booked at least two months in advance. The flight duration from Katra to Sanjhichhat is approximately 8 minutes, accommodating up to five to six passengers per trip. The helipad in Katra is located on Udhampur Road, about 2 km from the Katra Bus Stand.
Once you arrive at Sanjhichhat, it takes around 30 minutes to reach Vaishno Devi Bhawan. From there, you can choose additional services such as horses, palkis, or porters, or simply walk the remainder of the route. The approximate helicopter fare is ₹1800 per person (one-way) and ₹3600 per person (round trip) from Katra ↔ Sanjhichhat, making it an affordable and convenient option for many devotees.
3. Vaishno Devi Yatra by Palanquins & Ponies
For pilgrims who find the 12–13 km uphill journey physically demanding, services like palanquins (palkis) and ponies are widely available throughout the yatra route. These options are especially preferred by elderly devotees, families with young children, and those unable to trek. All pony, palki, and porter services are regulated by the Municipal Committee, ensuring safety, transparency, and comfort for travellers. Devotees can hire these services at both Katra and Ardhkuwari, depending on individual requirements.
Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi
Vaishno Devi attracts devotees throughout the year, making it one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. However, the most popular time for travellers is between March and July, when the weather is warm and pleasant—perfect for darshan and trekking. During these months, temperatures usually range from 17°C to 31°C, ensuring a comfortable journey for families, elderly devotees, and children. Because of this ideal weather, many pilgrims prefer planning their Vaishno Devi tour with their loved ones during this period.
From August to September, the region witnesses moderate to heavy rainfall. While the monsoon adds freshness and greenery to the surroundings, trekking can become slightly challenging due to slippery trails. Still, many devotees who enjoy the monsoon ambiance prefer travelling during these months to experience Vaishno Devi in a calmer and misty environment.
The winter season, from November to February, brings extremely cold temperatures and even snowfall in the higher regions. Due to the freezing conditions, a large number of travellers avoid visiting during this time. Trekking can be difficult, but for those who enjoy winter adventures and wish to witness the divine shrine in snowy surroundings, this season offers a uniquely serene and spiritually uplifting experience.
