The Route: Darjeeling to Gangtok Distance and Travel Time:
The distance from Darjeeling to Gangtok is around 100 km, and it usually takes 4 to 5 hours by car. There are two main routes:
- Via Jorethang – Slightly longer but less prone to traffic and landslides.
- Via Rangpo – The more common route, especially if you need permits at the Rangpo check post.
I chose the Rangpo route, as it’s more scenic and has better road conditions in most seasons. Make sure to leave early in the morning to avoid fog and traffic, especially in peak tourist months.

- Lamahatta Eco Park–
Just 23 km from Darjeeling, Lamahatta is a peaceful forest garden with prayer flags fluttering in the wind and views of the Kanchenjunga range. A perfect short stop to stretch your legs.
- Teesta Valley Viewpoints–
As you drive closer to the Teesta River, you’ll come across multiple photo-worthy spots. The river’s turquoise waters winding through the mountains — absolutely mesmerizing.
- Lopchu Tea Garden–
This lesser-known tea estate is a hidden delight. Stop here for a fresh cup of tea and views that soothe the soul.
Entry Permits & Travel Formalities:
At Rangpo check post, Indian citizens just need a valid government ID. If you’re a foreign national, make sure to carry:
- Inner Line Permit (ILP) — available online or at the check post
- Passport and visa copies
- Passport-sized photographs
The process is straightforward but can take time during busy periods, so start early.
Food Stops You’ll Love:
There are small roadside eateries between Teesta and Singtam offering authentic momos, thukpa, and even fresh trout dishes. Don’t expect fancy cafes, but the taste and hospitality are heartwarming.
