My Journey from Darjeeling to Gangtok: A Scenic Himalayan Escape You Must Experience

darjeeling to gangtok tour

If you’re planning this route or even slightly considering it, trust me — you’re in for something magical.

After spending a few misty mornings sipping tea in Darjeeling, I decided to continue my adventure towards the heart of Sikkim — Gangtok. The Darjeeling to Gangtok road trip turned out to be one of the most beautiful journeys I’ve ever taken, filled with mountain views, lush valleys, and unexpected gems along the way.

The distance from Darjeeling to Gangtok is around 100 km, and it usually takes 4 to 5 hours by car. There are two main routes:

  1. Via Jorethang – Slightly longer but less prone to traffic and landslides.
  2. Via Rangpo – The more common route, especially if you need permits at the Rangpo check post.

I chose the Rangpo route, as it’s more scenic and has better road conditions in most seasons. Make sure to leave early in the morning to avoid fog and traffic, especially in peak tourist months.

This journey is more than just going from Point A to Point B — it’s an experience.

  • Lamahatta Eco Park

Just 23 km from Darjeeling, Lamahatta is a peaceful forest garden with prayer flags fluttering in the wind and views of the Kanchenjunga range. A perfect short stop to stretch your legs.

  • Teesta Valley Viewpoints

As you drive closer to the Teesta River, you’ll come across multiple photo-worthy spots. The river’s turquoise waters winding through the mountains — absolutely mesmerizing.

  • Lopchu Tea Garden

This lesser-known tea estate is a hidden delight. Stop here for a fresh cup of tea and views that soothe the soul.

At Rangpo check post, Indian citizens just need a valid government ID. If you’re a foreign national, make sure to carry:

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP) — available online or at the check post
  • Passport and visa copies
  • Passport-sized photographs

The process is straightforward but can take time during busy periods, so start early.

There are small roadside eateries between Teesta and Singtam offering authentic momos, thukpa, and even fresh trout dishes. Don’t expect fancy cafes, but the taste and hospitality are heartwarming.
